"WICKEN WAR MEMORIAL"

To the eternal memory of the men of WICKEN who died in the service of their country
Eight in the Great War of 1914-1919 and four in 1939-145

The Wicken memorial, on Pond Green, is a polished, grey granite obelisk, upon a three-tiered plinth, sitting upon a two-tiered flagged pavement. The front face bears the dates 1914 1919 within a wreath of laurels, under which, on the top tier of the plinth is a quote from the Scriptures above a list of 8 names of those who fell in WW1, with the dedication beneath. On the east face are the dates 1939-1945, and the names of 4 men who fell in WW2. All the lettering is incised and gilded.
The names for WW1 are listed in approximate order of date of death, giving rank, initials, surname and unit, seemingly so ordered to keep the Baileys together

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old,
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning,
We will remember them.
